Your dog NEEDS structure! a lot of people think that their dog gets lots of exercise, they spend hours at the dog park, hours in the backyard playing, walking for hours on end while the dog pulls and sniffs and has a great time.... and all of this is great! but you are missing the key element of structure in all of these activities and without structure you are saying to the dog that your in charge and you've got this, organizing the dogs thoughts and teaching impulse control... its like giving a group of kids a basketball and a court and telling them to go play VS picking teams, giving uniforms and having a ref to make sure the game is played by the rules.... one of these is missing structure and its a totally different ball game!
These 3 simple commands will add structure to your dogs life and can resolve other annoying problems that are not related.
1) SIT with RELEASE COMMAND and EYE CONTACT. This is so simple yet you are teaching so many things at one time. Its a simple and essential skill that takes the place of 10 other separate commands. I have done so many posts and videos on this please read through for detailed instructions.
2) PLACE command. This is very simple for dogs to understand and so use full around the house and very good at adding structure to a dogs life. A lot of clients notice a change right away with just the place command when they practice it for 30 minutes or more per day.
3) STRUCTURED WALK. I haven't posted about this yet but will go through in detail in my next post. Essentially a structured walk is having your dog pay attention to you instead of the environment. This is key to a lot of reactive dogs, the dog must stay behind or beside you, no sniffing or eliminating on the walk... you are simply walking and the dog is watching you to make sure he or she is in the right position. You are making the choices where to go not the dog.
