Why is exercise important? Exercise is important for dogs for the same reasons it is for people. Dogs need mental and physical stimulation to stay healthy and more importantly out of trouble. As the mother of twin boys I understand and can relate this concept in relation to them. Tired boys are always better, they are easier to deal with, get into less trouble, they are getting physical and mental exercise and more important they are having fun! Its exactly the same for your dog.
Whats the best bang for my buck when it comes to exercising my dog with minimal time? We are all busy, running around doing this and that, working, picking up kids.... then you come home from a long day at work and there is the dog with the ball in his mouth ready to go.... remember while you were out all day working he was at home probably waiting all day for you to come home so that he could spend some time with you. You could take him for a walk, play ball in the back yard but I am going to touch on some exercises that I don't see often that I consider the most efficient... meaning the dog expends more energy in less time.
Flirt pole - This is my top pick for physical exercise. It is a pretty simple concept and if you google it you can find images and even videos. This is an exercise that I picked up from my background in training personal protection dogs, we use to use this to build prey drive... but its excellent exercise and really the dogs are very tired in a matter of minutes. its also a great way to add training like "out" or "sit" and then reward the dog with chasing the flirt pole. Its also very similar to Lure Coursing (but without the course of course lol)
Teaching tricks - This is my top pick for metal stimulation or exercise. A lot of people neglect this aspect when we think about exercise but mental exercise can tire a dog out quickly, and also adds that element of mental stimulation, gets their brains working and also helps them bond with their owner. Teaching simple things like shake a paw, wave or more complex exercises like play dead, roll over.... these all make for great exercise for your pooch. If you need help with how to get starting training some cool tricks for your dog contact me and I would be more then happy to help you.
